How to spot fake job notices and job scams
Last reviewed 05 Oct 2026 · by the RingMyJob team
Fake recruitment notices and job offers circulate every day on WhatsApp, Telegram and social media, often using the names of real ministries, railways, banks and companies. They exist to take your money or your personal details. These checks will catch most of them.
Warning signs
- Payment for a job. No genuine government body, PSU or reputable company asks for money to guarantee selection, release an appointment letter or "process" a job. The only payment in a real government recruitment is the application fee, paid on the official website.
- Selection without an exam or interview. Government jobs are filled through the selection process announced in the notification. A "direct appointment" offer is a red flag.
- The wrong website address. Central and state government websites normally end in .gov.in or .nic.in. Look-alike sites often use .com, .org or .in addresses with official-sounding names.
- Personal email or phone numbers. Official notices do not ask you to reply to a Gmail address or a mobile number.
- Pressure to act now. "Only two seats left, pay today" is a sales trick, not a recruitment rule.
- Requests for bank details, OTPs or passwords. Never share them, whoever is asking.
How to check a notice
- Open the organisation's official website yourself, by typing the address or using a search engine, not by tapping a forwarded link.
- Look for the same notice in its recruitment or careers section. If it is not there, treat it as fake.
- For notices that claim to come from the central government, check whether the Press Information Bureau's fact-check service has flagged them.
If you have been approached or cheated
Stop all payments and do not share more information. Report online financial fraud through the national cybercrime portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or the cybercrime helpline 1930, and inform your bank quickly if money has left your account.
RingMyJob lists jobs only from official websites and feeds, and every listing links to the official page so you can check it yourself. We never ask job seekers for money. If you see a listing on our site that looks wrong, please report it.
This guide gives general information. Rules, dates and fees differ between recruitments, so always read the official notification before you apply.
