How to read a government job notification

Last reviewed 05 Oct 2026 · by the RingMyJob team

Government job notifications can run to dozens of pages, but they follow a familiar pattern. Once you know where to look, you can decide in a few minutes whether a post is right for you.

The parts of a notification

Five things to check before applying

  1. You meet the age limit on the cut-off date, including any relaxation you are entitled to.
  2. You hold the exact qualification asked for, or will by the date stated.
  3. You have the documents for your category, issued within the required dates.
  4. For state jobs, you meet any domicile or language requirement.
  5. You know the last date, and you apply a few days early. Official websites slow down near the deadline.

Watch for corrigenda

Organisations often publish a corrigendum or addendum that changes dates, adds posts or corrects eligibility. Check the official website again before the last date. On RingMyJob, each listing links to the official page, so you can see any updates there.
