PSU jobs for freshers: the main routes in

Last reviewed 05 Oct 2026 · by the RingMyJob team

Public sector undertakings (PSUs) such as power, oil and gas, steel, defence production and engineering companies offer stable careers with good training. They recruit freshers in several different ways, so it helps to know which route fits your qualification.

1. Engineers: GATE-based recruitment

Many PSUs, especially in the power, oil and gas and engineering sectors, have recruited engineering graduates as executive or management trainees using their GATE scores. Each recruitment notice says which GATE paper and which year's score it accepts, and you apply separately to every PSU through its own website. If you are an engineering student who wants a PSU career, preparing well for GATE keeps several doors open at once.

2. PSUs' own written tests

Some PSUs hold their own computer-based tests for trainees, officers and non-executive posts, followed by interviews or skill tests. These are announced on the company's careers page.

3. Professional qualifications

Finance, HR, law and other functions recruit candidates with qualifications such as CA, CMA, MBA or law degrees. Selection is usually a written test and/or interview, as the notice describes.

4. Diploma holders and ITI-qualified candidates

Many PSUs recruit technicians, junior engineers and operators with a diploma or ITI qualification through written and trade tests.

5. Apprenticeships

PSUs take a large number of graduate, diploma and trade apprentices under the Apprentices Act. Apprenticeships are a training period with a stipend, not permanent jobs, but they give valuable experience. Apprentices are generally engaged through the government's apprenticeship portals, and each PSU's notice explains which portal to register on.
